Introduction

The Bio Book Club is an exclusive part of the Biomedicine Society. It is a monthly book club where all members of the society, including committee members, come together to discuss the current book: what they liked about it, their favourite characters, the next book on the list, and what they would ask the author. It is a welcoming environment that also includes polls and votes so members can choose their next read. After hearing about the books discussed in the previous event, even those who did not attend can suggest titles. The most voted-for book is then chosen for the month.

Bio Book Club

This year I had the privilege of leading the Bio Book Club - a monthly escape into literature where many insightful conversations took place. It was about more than just books; it was about reflecting, taking a break from the pressures of academic life, and thinking about the world beyond the lab.

Being such a big part of the Bio Book Club helped me grow not only as a student but also as a listener and communicator. I learned how to guide conversations and create a space where everyone felt welcome, even if they had not read the book and simply wanted to come and listen.

My team gave me incredible support, whether it was designing posters or preparing food for the events. The president of the Biomedicine Society, whom I worked closely with, gave me constant encouragement

One of our first Bio Book Club events was a Halloween-themed get-together in partnership with Bio Bites. The culinary team brought the festive spirit with ghost-shaped cookies, cupcakes, and pizza, making the night extra fun. We discussed our very first club book, The Night She Disappeared, by Lisa Jewell, which offered a rich ground for conversation. Attendees shared what they loved about the book and any questions they had. To end the night, we voted on the next read and the genres people were most interested in.

Another memorable event was a collaboration with Bio Art and Bio Bites. Attendees designed their own bookmarks, giving them a chance to express themselves creatively and enjoy a relaxed evening. Bio Bites made delicious cupcakes that were enjoyed throughout the session. Once again, we combined art, food, and great book discussions, as well as exploring what people wanted to see next from the club.

My role

My favourite part of being the Bio Book Club lead was connecting with people who also love to escape into stories as much as I do and encouraging those who had never been big readers to see how impactful books can be. I met students from all years and different courses, listened to their opinions, and had engaging conversations about the books. These moments were both insightful and personally rewarding. I organised events, promoted monthly polls, and helped create an environment that felt more like a circle of friends than a formal club. I watched conversations grow from quiet reflections to passionate debates. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo sparked some of the most spirited discussions, while The Alchemist was the most inspiring book I read in the Club. One of my favourite quotes from it is:

“And when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.”

Lastly, to all the members who read along, cast votes, or simply joined for a chat: thank you for making this club so special and welcoming. If you are looking for great conversations and reading for fun, I hope you will join next year.

After all, stories stay with us long after exams are over.
