University life has been a whirlwind of discovery, growth, and unexpected opportunities. One of the defining moments of my academic journey so far was taking part in the biodebate during PassionFlash - an experience that pushed me out of my comfort zone and rewarded me with more than just a victory. As a biomedical student, I have always enjoyed exploring ethical questions and the boundaries of modern healthcare, but I never imagined I would be defending those ideas in front of a crowd.

Preparing for the debate was both exciting and intense. Our team spent hours researching, crafting arguments, and anticipating counterpoints. It was not just about gathering facts; we had to present them persuasively, challenge opposing views, and remain composed under pressure. During this process, I realised how important teamwork was. Each of us brought different strengths such as research skills, rhetorical flair, and strategic thinking, and together we built a cohesive, compelling case.

The day of the biodebate was electric. Standing on stage in front of a packed room, I felt a mixture of nervousness and adrenaline. Yet as soon as we began speaking, the nerves gave way to focus. We found our rhythm, built on each other’s points, and responded confidently to challenges. It was a true test of clarity, confidence, and composure. When the judges announced that we had won, it felt incredible to see our hard work recognised. More than the result, I valued the skills I gained, from improving my public speaking and critical thinking to learning how to work effectively as part of a team.

The biodebate covered fascinating topics in science, from cosmetic surgery to medical ethics, offering a platform to explore issues that matter deeply in our field. It is now something I proudly highlight on my CV under skills such as public speaking, critical thinking, and teamwork. Looking back, the PassionFlash biodebate was more than just a university event. It was a turning point that showed me stepping into the unknown can lead to some of the most memorable and transformative experiences. Most importantly, it reminded me that a good idea, when well communicated, really can make an impact.
