As a first-year Biomedical Science undergraduate, it can feel overwhelming to face the number of career paths available after graduation. That was the case for me until I attended the HANS Career Series, hosted by Dr. Sara Namvar. These online sessions provided a clear and insightful guide through the many options open to students like me. The series has proven to be one of the most valuable additions to my professional development so far.
The HANS Career Series brought in former Biomedical Science students who have successfully built careers in a wide range of fields, from clinical practice to academic research. What made the sessions particularly impactful was how relatable and honest the guest speakers were. Many had once been in my position, and their experiences helped me figure out my next steps. A recurring theme across the talks was flexibility and how a Biomedical Science degree can open doors to many different futures. For example, two speakers had gone on to study medicine in Bulgaria after completing their BSc. They offered practical guidance on the application process, adjusting to life abroad, and the realities of studying medicine in another country. Their accounts were both encouraging and realistic, describing in detail what life is like as an international medical student.
Other sessions featured professionals working in more specialised fields, providing advice on genetic counselling, nuclear medicine, PhD research, and more. These talks were particularly eye-opening, as they introduced careers I had not previously considered. One standout moment was a session with a researcher who discussed the path into a PhD and the diverse opportunities that come with a life in academic research. This is now something I see as a serious option for my future. The speakers’ willingness to share their journeys, including their challenges, detours, and successes, helped me realise that there is no single “right” path after university. Whether it is further study, clinical work, or venturing abroad, the key is to explore and stay informed.
Overall, attending the HANS Career Series has expanded my understanding of the scientific and clinical fields. It has helped me begin to build a clearer picture of what I might want for my future and has added depth to my professional skills portfolio. I gained valuable knowledge and learned the importance of networking, adaptability, and being proactive in exploring opportunities beyond university. Looking ahead, I feel more confident about navigating the road after graduation, thanks to the time I spent learning from those who have experienced it before.
