The Biomedicine society introduced the BioArt Club in November 2020 with an aim to give students, on a often highly technical programme of study, the opportunity to showcase their artistic skills, and to bring students and academics together to celebrate the interface between science and art. Students took part in the Bioart annual competition, with this year’s theme being ‘Perception of Pain’.
Twenty finalists were selected from participants from across the School of Science, Engineering and Environment. Finalists were selected by an internal biomedicine student and staff vote and displayed at the School BioArt exhibition on 22nd March 2022.
The exhibition started with introductory talks from Professor Joe Sweeney, Dr Sara Namvar and alum artist Caitlin Owen, congratulating all the artists and finalist for taking part. After hosting events mostly online for sometime, it was exciting having the event in-person allowing attendees to choose their favourite works of art and connect with the artists about their inspiration.
Activities took place alongside the exhibition allowing the audience to release their creative freedom with a little bit of art themselves! We had the appearance of a special guest, ‘Daphne’ the praying mantis, escorted by academic and photographer Dr Jamie Gundry - check out @GundryPhoto! The audience were were all so keen to have a photo taken with Daphne!
Final voting was down to the audience, with some deliberation by a panel of judges. Winners were presented with a trophy and BIG Amazon voucher prizes! All finalist and participants were awarded a trophy and a certificate to mark their participation. The winners were:
1st: Into the Unknown
by Nana-Nabiha Yusuf (£250 prize)
2nd: Lonliness

3rd: The Beauty In Pain
