Museums aren’t just a place to display artifacts, but a place of exploring the whirlwind of wonders that lie within them. Bringing people together is a powerful step towards building stronger relationships not just in everyday life but in the biomedicine society too. Now let’s delve into our museum trip!
A recent event brought academics and students together at the museum of science industry (MOSI). The world can be a fascinating place full of wonders, but the dark mysteries of disease can unravel an unexpected path. An exciting cancer themed exhibition at MOSI attracted our students to organise the visit. Activities kicked off with a coffee at museum café and we were pleased to have a turnout of nearly 30 students. Everyone just loves a good Sunday adventure! It just goes to show how keen our Salford students are to learn new things, meet new people and grasp opportunity!
Cancer is lifechanging in more ways than we realise. Some of us have had first-hand experience with the disease – from family members to friends and have even lost those we care dearly about as a consequence. Many Salford students are interested in clinical careers, so finding out more about cancer patients, empowering their stories and developments in chemotherapeutics is also an important career development opportunity. The exhibition was highly varied, including an ocean of research, patient care and historical treatment timelines alongside beautiful cancer themed artwork.
But what did we learn from the exhibition? The answer to that is not a straightforward one as there was so many new things everyone has taken away! Academics were even surprised at some of the cancer revolution development as they were learning so much too. So, it is true then, that you learn something new every day! There were so many interesting facts that intrigued us, from plants developing cancer to lived experiences of the disease. Having learnt how important cancer treatments are and the devastating impacts it can have on families, we have all taken with us those precious stories and the inspirational ongoing cancer research.
The overall day was filled with great memories, building, and developing new and existing friendships, discovering new knowledge and most of all, fun! Some students also had an evening meal together later, reflecting on the day and tucking into some appetising dishes. As if the day hadn’t been amazing enough!
The feedback from our members has been overwhelmingly positive throughout the trip and we aim to keep our students wanting more. The pandemic has hit students hard, but events are slowly beginning to become face-to-face again, with students more eager than ever to pull off more successful social events and development opportunities! So, if you’re one of the biomed soc members who have more ideas for great social events, we would love you to get involved. There are many people from across different courses too, so there is always something for everyone.
